Chengyu Gao, PhD

Research Scientist

Dr. Gao specializes in untargeted and targeted metabolomics and lipidomics and has extensive experience in LC/MS and GC/MS analysis. He joined the facility in January 2023. At the facility, he leads the untargeted metabolomics analysis (Thermo Scientific Exploris 480 instrument) and targeted compound quantification (Agilent 6495D Triple Quadrupole instrument), while also providing technical expertise on experimental design, multivariate data analysis, and pathway analysis. In addition, he works and facilitates native mass spectrometry analysis on the Thermo Scientific UHMR with offline or online buffer exchanges, and accurate mass measurement on the Bruker ultraflexXtreme TOF-TOF and Bruker 15 Tesla FT-ICR. Dr. Gao received his PhD from The Ohio State University under the supervision of Dr. Devin Peterson in 2021, where he applied an untargeted LC/MS flavoromics approach to isolate and identify novel flavor molecules that significantly modulate bitter perception. Before joining the facility, he was a senior scientist at PepsiCo global R&D research center, where he developed and applied the mass spectrometry-based untargeted chemical profiling approach to profile and predict flavor change in foods and beverages.
